Tutor Training

Upcoming Classes:
Our next Volunteer Tutor Training is scheduled on September 26, October 3, 10, 17, and 24. Our training sessions will be from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. There will be a follow-up training session on November 14 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. The training sessions will be combined workshops for prospective tutors of adult basic literacy skills and English as a Second Language (ESL).

All trainings take place at Bergen Community College Ciarco Learning Center at 355 Main St. in Hackensack, NJ 07601. There is free parking behind the building. If you are interested, please confirm your attendance with me by September 20, 2019, either by email or phone.

We ask that you plan to arrive 15 minutes early on the first evening in order to complete the inevitable paperwork. Please bring a current resume or CV with you. There is a $20.00 fee for the training materials you will be given at the first class.

Feel free to bring something to eat or drink.

I look forward to meeting all of you.

For more information, please email Antonio Brugnoli or call 201-301-9664.

Volunteer as a Tutor

Just one and a half hours a week of working with an adult student could change their life—and yours.

Project Literacy needs volunteers to work on a one-to-one basis as tutors, helping adults with reading, writing, speaking English, and math at our location at 355 Main Street on the corner of Passaic Street in Hackensack, NJ or at a location convenient to both tutor and student such as a local library. Location is determined by student and tutor.

Our staff will guide you through the necessary steps to becoming a tutor by providing 15 hours of training, matching you with a student whose learning needs fit your abilities, and supporting you in working with your student.

If you are interested, please call Project Literacy for information regarding upcoming dates for training at 201-301-9664 or email us at read@project-literacy.org. We would love to hear from you.

Today’s emphasis for teaching English language learners skills that will motivate and enhance civic participation is well-justified. Far too often adults sit in classes to practice English, but then rarely attempt its use outside of the classroom. These lessons connect learners with information and practice on a topic that is relevant and practical in application to their lives. These can be read online by clicking on the links below.
