Project Literacy, a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation, does not charge its students since the vast majority of them are unemployed or underemployed.

What Does It Mean to Donate?

Our students are adults, old and young, who have never finished school and cannot get a good job. They are immigrants looking to learn English, find jobs and become part of American society. They are older people who cannot read well who want to be able to read to their grandchildren.

The Department of Justice states, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure.”

According to the International Bureau of Education there is a close connection between illiteracy and poverty at all levels.

Since our organization began in 1987, we have assisted over 5,700 people in reading and writing, speaking English and math. Most of these people have gone on to either college, employment or a better job.

Where Does the Money Go?

Project Literacy, on average, has approximately 120 active students with another 50 on our waiting list at any given time. Our goal is to expand our volunteer base enabling us to expand our services to more people in need.

Project Literacy advertises in local newspapers for tutor volunteers to match the growing demand for help. In addition to normal office expenses, we purchase materials, mainly books that we make available to our tutors to use in their tutoring sessions.

Our staff has one fulltime employee and two part time employees who spend their time recruiting, vetting, training and matching volunteer tutors with students on our waiting lists.

The staff also keeps track of students' progress, schedules student evaluations, helps with fundraising, clerical work and obtains reading and other student and office materials. They also support our tutors and students in solving any probelems that might come up.

Annual donations significantly impact our work. The amount of funds we receive determine how much additional time we need to spend on fundraising vs time spent finding tutors and matching them with students.
